  Adoption

Adoption is a legal process whereby a child becomes the legal child of a family not related to the child by blood. The adopted child is entitled to all privileges belonging to a biological child of the adoptive parents. By law, many adoption records are kept confidential. This is to protect the adopted child as well as the biological parents. There are two steps to the adoption process. First step is the termination of the biological parents' rights over the child. The second step is for these parental rights to be transferred to the adopting parents. Adoption law varies from state to state.
